Wolves and Daggers is the first book in the series Steampunk Red Riding Hood by Melanie Karsak. I picked this up mainly because I found a blog that had the top 10 free books on Kindle and noticed that it was written in the first person so thought I would give it ago.
Wolves and Daggers follows a Red Cape Society Agent that is part of the Queens Secret Service Clemeny Louvel. There focus is to keep the Werewolf packs that live in London from harming the human population. At first, it was difficult to tell what time period the book was set in because it didn’t say outright and by a process on elimination I worked out it was set in the Victorian era. Since reading the book I now know that Steampunk is actually a whole sub genre of science fiction based in this time zone.
While not hugely into the fairy tales I really did enjoy this adaptation of Red Riding Hood bring the fairy tales into a seemingly real world was a pleasant experience. While Clemeny isn’t Red Riding Hood per-say she shares quite a few of her characteristics and back story. The story itself was really well put together and enjoyable if not a little fast for me. While the intrigue was there some parts of the book it did feel like it could have been longer to build up the suspense.
Overall I gave Wolves and Daggers a 3/5 because I did enjoy it and while I felt the suspense could have been higher with a few more twists and turns it’s left me wanting to read more in the series. While it is a criticism that it was on the shorter side it enables you to focus on the one topic and move onto the next in the series.
